Queen - Royal Rarities

Todo empezó en 1968 cuando Brian May y Tim Staffell estudiantes de la Imperial College, deciden formar un grupo musical. En la escuela anuncian que necesitan un baterista y Roger Taylor estudiante de medicina toma el puesto. Llaman al grupo Smile, siendo su discográfica la Mercury Records grabando en los Trident Studios en 1969. Tim estudiaba en el Ealing College of Art donde conoce a Frederick Bulsara (o Farrock Mommi Balsara) le invita a escuchar a la banda. En 1970 "Smile" se separa, Tim inicia un grupo nuevo llamado Humpy Bong y Freddie deja su banda "Wreckage" y se junta con Brian y Roger. Freddie cambia su nombre por el de Mercury cambiando también el nombre de la banda por Queen, entonces necesitaban a un bajista, es cuando llega John Deacon. En 1973, Trident y EMI firman un contrato de exclusividad con Queen, y en julio de ese mismo año realizan su primer álbum "Queen". "Queen II" aparece en Marzo de 1974, y en Abril la banda realiza su primera gira por EE.UU. Mientras trabajaban en su tercer álbum conocen a Roy Thomas Baker el cual los ayuda en"Sheer Heart Attack". En enero de 1975, Queen realiza su primer tour en solitario por EE.UU., las entradas se agotaron. En Abril visitan por primera vez Japón, siendo verdaderamente aclamados por sus fans. Queen comienza a trabajar en su nuevo álbum en Junio; cuando deciden hacer Bohemian Rhapsody todo mundo decía que esa canción no iba a ser un éxito, ya que duraba más de 5 minutos. Pero Freddie le da una copia del sencillo a su amigo DJ de Londres Kenny Everett, pidiéndole que no la pasara, pero no le hace caso y la pone en la radio. Para su sorpresa la canción se vuelve un éxito rotundo, estableciendo a Queen como la banda de la época. El sencillo se mantiene en el nº 1 por nueve semanas. El álbum "A Night At The Opera" fue realizado en Noviembre de 1975 siendo un tremendo éxito ganando su primer disco de Platino.

Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy metal, as well as vaudevillian music hall, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's music was a bizarre yet highly accessible fusion of the macho and the fey. For years, their albums boasted the motto "no synthesizers were used on this record," signaling their allegiance with the legions of post-Led Zeppelin hard rock bands. But vocalist Freddie Mercury brought an extravagant sense of camp to the band, pushing them toward kitschy humor and pseudo-classical arrangements, as epitomized on their best-known song, "Bohemian Rhapsody." Mercury, it must be said, was a flamboyant bisexual who managed to keep his sexuality in the closet until his death from AIDS in 1991.
