El grupo Pink Floyd nació en Cambridge, como la evolución de un pequeño grupo de aficionados a la música, 'Arquitectural Abdams'(anteriormente 'Sigma 6'), que debían su nombre al hecho de que la mayoría de sus miembros estudiaba arquitectura en la Universidad Politécnica de Londres. Los componentes del grupo, por aquel entonces, eran:Nicolas Mason, Roges Waters, Richard Wright, Clive Metcalf, Juliette Gale y Keith Noble. Cuando Clive y Juliette abandonaron el grupo, se les unió Roger Keith 'Syd' Barret. Fue entonces cuando decidieron cambiar el nombre del grupo para iniciar una nueva etapa, bautizándolo como Pink Floyd, en honor a dos ídolos del blues: Pink Anderson y Floyd Council. El grupo queda conformado definitivamente con Nick Mason en la batería, Roger Waters en el bajo y como cantante, Richard Wright en los teclados y Syd Barret con la guitarra. Su primera intención era hacer una especie de blues, aunque con variaciones instrumentales, y combinando todo ello con un gran juego de luces que revolucionaran la estética de los escenarios. En sus inicios participan en varios espectáculos donde dieron a conocer su revolucionaria forma de entender la música (un nuevo movimiento llamado Psicodelia). pink floydEn 1967 lanzan su primer álbum, 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawin' y varios sencillos, a la vez que realizan una gran gira por Inglaterra.

Pink Floyd is the premier space rock band. Since the mid-'60s, their music relentlessly tinkered with electronics and all manner of special effects to push pop formats to their outer limits. At the same time they wrestled with lyrical themes and concepts of such massive scale that their music has taken on almost classical, operatic quality, in both sound and words. Despite their astral image, the group was brought down to earth in the 1980s by decidedly mundane power struggles over leadership and, ultimately, ownership of the band's very name. After that time, they were little more than a dinosaur act, capable of filling stadiums and topping the charts, but offering little more than a spectacular recreation of their most successful formulas.
