Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird: The Movie

Junto a la Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd es la banda más importante que ha conocido el rock sureño, un estilo musical aposentado en la emulsión de blues-rock, country, boogie, honky tonk y rock'n'roll y en una apostura personal que subraya sus raíces telúricas y aliento confederado, de finalidad reinvidicativa y lúdica. Las primeras semillas de Lynyrd Skynyrd fueron diseminadas a mitad de la década de los 60, cuando un grupo de estudiantes de Jacksonville, ciudad del estado de Florida, decidieron formar una banda a la que llamaron My Backyard. Con posterioridad se fueron denominando The Noble Five, Wild Cats, Sons of Satan, Once Percent, Conqueror Worm y finalmente Lynyrd Skynyrd, nombre tomado de su profesor de gimnasia en el instituto, un tipo malhumorado llamado Leonard Skinner. El grupo estaba compuesto por el cantante y guitarrista Ronnie VanZant (nacido el 15 de enero de 1948 en Jacksonville), los guitarristas Allen Collins (nacido el 19 de julio de 1952 en Jacksonville) y Gary Rossington (nacido el 4 de diciembre de 1951 en Jacksonville), el bajista Leon Wilkeson (que sustituyó a Larry Junstrom), el teclista Billy Powell y el batería Bob Burns. Tras patearse los locales de varios estados sureños, consiguieron llamar la atención de Al Kooper, el ex miembro de Blood, Sweat & Tears, quien después de contemplar un concierto del grupo en el club Funocchio's de Atlanta, les propuso firmar un contrato discográfico con la MCA. Poco antes de su incorporación a la MCA se les unió otro guitarrista, Ed King, un antiguo componente de la banda psicodélica Strawberry Alarm Clock.

Occasionally, companies will throw consumers a bone and give them a good value. Artisan Home Entertainment has done this with 2001's Lynyrd Skynyrd DVD double feature Freebird: The Movie and Tribute Tour. Both of these videos appear on DVD for the first time, and this low-priced, two-for-one disc exceeding three hours' playing time is a treasure. The DVD is not perfect — the menu is clumsy and you can't access songs individually — but these two videos existing in the digital domain is what's important. 1996's Freebird: The Movie captures the full glory of classic Lynyrd Skynyrd before the 1977 plane crash. Three concerts yielded the terrific live footage, primarily Knebworth Fair in Hertfordshire, England, on August 21, 1976, but also Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ, on July 13, 1977, and A Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, CA, on July 4, 1977. The incendiary version of "Free Bird" was filmed in Oakland. Interviews are included too, but the most unforgettable thing about Freebird: The Movie — besides the superb performances under the watchful eye of vocalist Ronnie VanZant — is the haunting, grainy home movie footage shot on an airplane.
